School Counselors ... We Got the Beat!

Andrée Johnson – President

As the president of the South Dakota School Counselor’s Association (SDSCA) I would like to personally welcome you back to the 2005-2006 school year. The SDSCA Governing Board has an exciting year planned for you.

The theme for 2005-06 is “School Counselors…We Got the Beat!” Music is so much a part of all our lives. Who can go a day without hearing music via TV, radio or from someone singing in our building? As school counselors, we have the ability to set the tone in our schools through programs that foster a genuine respect for differences, improve communication skills, and build self-esteem. Harmony is created when school counselors promote nonviolent or bully-free environments. Just as the maestro of a symphony tries to bring out the best in each musician and his instrument, counselors too are conductors, as everyday we try to bring out the best in each individual. These examples are only a few; there are so many more ways – We Got the Beat!

Have you joined SDSCA yet this year? Don’t miss out. SDSCA provides many services and benefits including: leadership training; quality programming through conferences and workshops; networking; mentoring programs; involvement in government; and recognition of outstanding counselors. Enhance your professional development by renewing or joining today.

What can you look forward to in SDSCA this year? Here are just a few things – a new, updated web site at www.counselors.k12.sd.us. Stacey Solsaa is in the process of making this an even more effective, user-friendly site. Contact her at stacysolsaa@k12.sd.us with your ideas. Our five newsletters will be done exclusively online this year. I’ll send you notices via email when the new issues are posted. April 20, 2006, Dr. Edward Jacobs will be our featured speaker at the SDCA pre-conference in Pierre. His presentation entitled “Counseling Should Never Be Boring – Using Creative Techniques” will be an inspiration to all working in the field of counseling.

Feel free to contact me with your questions or concerns at (605) 367-8328 or at johnsona@sf.k12.sd.us. I look forward to working in concert with you!
